Stress

What exactly is stress? Stress is classically defined as any “non-specific demand for change.” We think of stress as being “bad” and relaxation as being “good.” Actually, in healthy doses, stress is a good thing. The stress that is tension in our muscles allows us to stand upright. The “demand for change” that is education creates a stronger and quicker mind. The “demand for change” that is infection in our environment forces our bodies to become stronger in their ability to fight disease.

Good or healthy demand on the body is called “eustress.” At some point, that healthy demand on the body can flip over into being unhealthy and counterproductive. While we know the pressure of education can be good for us, we also know that when the pressure becomes too great, the demand that made us perform better actually begins to make us perform worse. Instead of thinking more clearly and sharply, we cannot think at all. We cannot access any information, any answers or anything we have learned. Test anxiety is a good example of this. The demand that was working for us begins to work against us. This is called “distress,” or unhealthy amounts of tension. We want to be able to increase the amount of demand we can sustain before eustress (good stress) becomes distress. The amount of demand we can handle before eustress becomes distress is called our “allostatic load.”
